Mildred Pierce Stinson passed away Monday, April 3, 2017 surrounded by her three loving daughters at the Gentiva Hospice Center in Columbus, GA. She was 85. Born March 10, 1932 in Alamo, GA, Mildred was a retired Registered Nurse from the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Center in Jackson, GA and former Cadet Hostess of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. She was the widow of Lt. Colonel William Clyde “Doc” Stinson, Jr., West Point Class of 1953, who was killed in action March 3, 1969 attempting to rescue his men in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam.
Survivors include her three daughters: Dawn Stinson Smith and her husband Glenn of Warrenton, VA, Leigh Ann Stinson Letson and her husband Mike of Isle of Palms, SC, Katherine Stinson Maddox and her husband Mike of Columbus, GA; her seven grandchildren: Michael Letson, Jr. and his wife Dana of Richmond Hill, GA, Rachel Letson Bunch and her husband Douglas of Hollywood, SC, Rebecca Letson Nelsen and her husband Blake of Bonaire, GA, Emma Smith Atkinson and her husband Jordan of Arlington, VA, Abi Smith of Moorestown, NJ, Max Maddox of Columbus, GA, Claire Maddox of Columbus, GA; her four great grandchildren: Leah White Nelsen and William Nelsen of Bonaire, GA, Cathryn “Ryn” Bunch and Layford “Ford” Bunch of Hollywood, SC.
Mildred will be buried in West Point Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Wednesday May 10, 2017. She will be reunited and laid to rest alongside her husband, Doc.
