Riley W. Fisher passed away Monday, December 10, 2018 at Northern Riverview Health Care Center in Haverstraw, NY. He was 83 years old. He was born on October 30, 1935 on Long Sault Island near Massena, NY, one of the eleven children of the late Howard R. and Gertrude Jessmer Fisher, who were tenant farmers. Riley was a retired police sergeant from Letchworth Village, Thiells, NY and a veteran of the U.S. Army who had served in the Korean War.
Survivors include his loving companion of 25+ years, Aurelia Baker, at home; daughters Tonya Fisher of North Carolina, Mary Fisher and husband Matthew Baucco of Bloomington, IN, and Cheryl Nanartowich and husband Victor of Highland Falls, NY; grandchildren Victor Jr., Michelle and husband Jason, Michael, and Christopher; great-grandchildren Jordan and Katlyn; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Riley is also survived by his brothers Frank (Jane) of Brasher Falls, NY; Edward of Wisconsin; Norman (Agnes) of Florida; Floyd (Rose) of West Haverstraw, NY; and Howard (Caroline) of Wurtsboro, NY. He was preceded in death by brothers Herbert, Robert, Delbert, and Eugene and sister Matilda.
Riley enjoyed taking his family on daytrips around New York to places like Bear Mountain State Park, Howe Caverns, and Catskill Game Farm. He was a fan of folk rock and Crosby, Stills, & Nash and Simon & Garfunkel were among his favorites. He was an avid cook who enjoyed good food and was often asked by the other officers to cook during his overnight shifts at Letchworth. He was also an accomplished baker with a sweet tooth. Meticulous and always curious about how things worked, Riley loved gadgets and collected pens and watches. He told terrible dad jokes, was a grand storyteller, and had a wicked sense of humor.
Funeral arrangements will be private and at the convenience of the family.
