Max H. Stroppel, Sr., a lifelong resident of Highland Falls, NY passed away Monday, August 6, 2018 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was 92 years old. Son of the late Max K. and Sarah M. Diller Stroppel, he was born October 1, 1925 in Highland Falls, NY.
Max was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII and was aboard the USS Glennon (DD620) during D-Day. He was a retired N.Y.S. Trooper out of Stony Point, NY. He was a member of Post Chapel, and a Co-Founder and Director of God's Gang of West Point, NY. He was a former member of Palisades Interstate Park Police Pistol Team, and a careerlong member of the Policeman's Benevolent Association. Max started the Diving Team Program at Palisades Interstate Park Police and was the recipient of the N.Y.S. Award of Valor for his rescue of a fisherman who had fallen through the ice in Lake Tiorati. Throughout his life, Max was dedicated to his family. During his retirement years he enjoyed playing golf and taking annual salmon fishing trips to Alaska.
Survivors include his wife Ella Wilson Stroppel, at home; his loving children: Max H. Stroppel, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Cornwall, NY, Debra McCormack-Graziano and her late husband Robert of Middletown, NY, Terrie Hoelscher and her husband Steve of Harpers Ferry, WV, Rhonda Flanagan and her husband Tom of Kingsland, GA, Scott L. Stroppel and his wife Shannon of Atlanta, GA; his twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Max was predeceased by his brothers: Charles "Chuck" Stroppel and Frederick "Ted" Stroppel.
Funeral arrangements will be private and at the convenience of the family.
